Russian Prototype Touring Car Print E-mail

Rumours and images have been circulating the web since March of this year about a very unique Russian built touring car. The pictures all have ‘A-Matix’ written on them, but this is not the final name of the car according to several forum posts. The car is built by Oleg Babich und Schupik Ilya and they have already won some races with it. I don’t know how hard the competition was, but design seems to be working!

The first version, of which a picture emerged a couple of months ago, had a transverse mounted motor with shaft drive which is something not often seen in touring cars so far. It requires a special transmission to drive the shaft at a 90 degree angle. This was unfortunately not visible in the picture. The other thing that stood out was the unusual suspension. I've already wondered why nobody has ever mounted a pan car type front suspension to a touring car. The suspension this car uses is a bit between a a pan car suspension and a normal a-arm suspension.

The new pictures that just emerged show a belt drive car with the same type of suspension. It’s main feature is the lack of coil over oil filled shocks. The car has suspension arms cut out of carbon fibre sheet. On one end they ride on what looks like pivot balls near the centre of the car, and on the other end the steering block is mounted. The top link to the steering block are two adjustable turnbuckles.

As far as I could figure things out from different forums, the car uses a new type of spring/damping system which is really easy and quickly adjustable and can also be changed for up-stroke and down-stroke damping separately. This is just like full size racing car shocks and allows for a much better adjustability of the suspension system to the track conditions. No other car currently on the market has this feature, and it would be a big leap in rc car technology if this is true! Apparently they have a patent pending for the system and that’s why they don’t like anybody taking any close up shots of the details.

It is hard to see how it works from the pictures. The suspension arms seem to be supported by what looks like some rubber blocks of some sort. It could be that the suspension arms itself flex, and the amount of flex is adjusted by these blocks. Another possibility is that they are using these rubber blocks as springs and dampers. I can see how this would work as a spring, I just can’t wrap my head around how the damping is done.

Hopefully we’ll get to hear more about this car soon, because it really looks like it has some very interesting ideas incorporated which could bring some big changes to rc touring car design! I also don’t know if this is just a hobby project or they are planning on selling the car as well. It looks very well made, and if there is really a patent in the works, it sounds pretty serious. The future will tell…

Barstow to Vegas with an RC Car Print E-mail

A really cool project I came across on the HPI website, drive an rc car through the Nevada desert from Barstow to Vegas, that's about 200km!

Image

HPI wanted to demonstrate that their Baja 5B 1/5th scale off road petrol buggy can handle this tough environment. One of their employees started it as a joke driving the car up a mountain while steering it from the passenger seat of a full size car. Then they came up with the idea of doing a big drive through the desert as a promotional stunt.

To see if the car held up and made it, check out the whole story, nice pictures and a video of the trip on the HPI website

Collari did it again, he's the 2007 1:8th on-road world champion! This is the 8th world title for him which is just amazing. There are not many guys in rc racing who even come close to that! The main final was a real thriller with lots of close racing and the first three drivers finishing within 6 seconds from each other after a one hour race!

An other big event went down 2 weeks ago which went completely under my radar. In Brisbane, Australia the 1:5th scale world championships were held. This class lacks a bit in popularity, especially in the US. That's probably why there wasn't a lot of publicity for this race.
In the end, Danish driver Martin Lissau managed to grab the title after the one hour main final. The full results:

On-Road Worlds Update Print E-mail

The on-road worlds in Argentina have been plagued by bad weather in the last couple of days. They weren’t able to drive for a whole day. Because of this the last two rounds of qualifying have been cancelled and they went straight into the finals.

These championships use a bit of a different system then the electric classes. You can ‘bump up’ to the next final if you finish in one of the first couple of places in your final, for instance from 1/8th final to 1/4th final. This way you can work your way up to the one hour long (!) main final. Only the drivers who qualified in the positions 1 till 4 get their main final places reserved. All other places are determined by the other finals.

The  four drivers who directly qualified for their place in the main final are:

1.                  Massimo Fantini

Serpent 960

2.                  Lamberto Collari

Kyosho Evolva M3

3.                  Adrien Bertin

Kyosho Evolva M3

4.                  Chris Tosolini

Kyosho Evolva M3

If the weather plays along the 1 hour main final will be run on Saturday. Up till then it will be interesting to see who makes it into the main and who can keep his nerves calm during the long battle for the win!

It seems the organisers of the 1:8th scale on-road world championships in Cordoba, Argentina have underestimated the amount of online-interest in the event. The official website has been down since the second day of the event when there wasn't even any racing going on!

If you want to keep up to date with the latest news and gossip from the worlds, head over to Red RC. They found some sponsors to actually sent someone trackside to do live coverage of the event! There are already a lot of nice detailed pictures from the cars and new parts on there after the first day of practice.
